 Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi is an acclaimed author known for her compelling storytelling and rich narratives.


Makumbi has written three books: two novels, Kintu and The First Woman (A Girl is a Body of Water), and a collection of short stories, Manchester Happened (Let’s Tell This Story Properly).

Born in Uganda, she grew up and worked as a high school teacher in Kampala. She holds a PhD from the University of Lancaster. Currently, Makumbi resides in Manchester, UK, with frequent visits to Uganda. She has taught English and Creative Writing at several universities in Britain.

Makumbi is a fellow of Yale University and George Mason University. She has also been a Writer in Residence at NIAS-KNAWS, an Artist in Residence at Stellenbosch Institute of Advanced Studies, and a DAAD Artist in Residence in Berlin.

Her writing has garnered numerous awards, including the prestigious Windham-Campbell Prize and the Global Commonwealth Short Story Prize. Makumbi's books have been translated into several languages.
